VIRTUAL SPECIALIST MENTORING
Our virtual specialist mentoring programme supports vulnerable young people aged 11-25 years old, with enterprise, employability, housing, parenting, relationships and mental health. We are reaching out to those who are most at risk of abuse, criminal activity, exploitation, unemployment and neglect and working with them to lead the positive changes in their lives.
This is a collaborative process which is person-led, through which individuals are empowered to make positive changes in their lives, helping to develop confidence and life skills.
1:1 Mentoring sessions - In a relaxed and non-judgemental virtual space, we welcome anyone who needs to talk to a person who cares and really listens. We first focus on building an open, positive and trusting relationship with the mentee and when they are ready we carefully progress to create plans and activities to support them in getting them to where they need to be.
Guidance sessions & Specialist group workshop – We are delivering support with enterprise, employability, housing, parenthood, relationships and mental health. The group sessions will also empower individuals to use their creativity, develop ideas, and encourage them to take ownership: offering opportunities to lead sessions, and to peer-support others; raising them to become leaders in their communities.
THE PANDEMIC IMPACT
Many of the people that we have worked with said that they were struggling with the initial Lockdown. It was impacting heavily on their anxiety and depression, but they said that they were happy to have someone that they could speak to on a regular basis in the midst of the pandemic, because it helped towards alleviating their fears and helped to build their confidence to navigate the ‘new normal’ coming out of Lockdown. The Covid-19 Pandemic has led to many local services closing down permanently or being over-capacity, therefore leaving vast numbers of vulnerable people on endless waiting lists for the critical support they need. The sudden loss of emotional and peer support for many months has resulted in an urgent demand for recovery support, as people transition out of Lockdown and face the ‘new normal’.
Through one-to-one sessions, we’re helping individuals to learn coping strategies to manage their mental health, which is facing a detrimental decline since the Coronavirus pandemic, where they’ve not only faced longer periods of isolation, but also where many have lost loved ones, employment opportunities, and have become increasingly more dependent upon benefits and foodbanks to survive. 1-1 sessions enable us to help individuals address the physical challenges they’re facing, as well as to understand what has led them to this crisis point. We are then supporting them to make action plans to move forward. This is a collaborative process which is person-led, through which individuals are empowered to make positive changes in their lives, helping to develop confidence and life skills.
Our weekly workshops will be interactive, creative and practical: bringing together individuals from diverse backgrounds, who are facing barriers to learning, and struggling to find independence within society.
We’re responding to service users’ needs by covering topics including:
Enterprise, careers and employability
CV writing and preparing for interview
Overcoming anxiety; developing life-skills, communication and citizenship
Exploring home-working opportunities and developing the skills in order to manage time efficiently.
HOW WE RUN OUR VIRTUAL PROJECT
Since the start of the Coronavirus pandemic, we have adapted all programmes to be delivered virtually over Zoom, WhatsApp, and by communicating through phone calls and text messaging. Through these provisions, we’re able to support the most isolated and marginalised individuals. Where technology is a challenge we are building up partnerships with local community projects to develop resources that can be hand delivered or iPad/tablet rentals, that services can lend to their clients.
